Don't know much about history
By Sally Haldorson
I catch most of my news in quick bursts via NPR while driving around town. Twice last week, I found myself listening an interview with Corby Kummer, who recently wrote an article for The Atlantic about Wal-Mart's new focus on selling local foods in its food markets. As usual, Wal-Mart sees a market rich with possibility and it is about to jump in--and probably change said market entirely.

Publishers as Brands
By Porchlight
In a conversation with Marshall Goldsmith, while he was in town for our LeaveSmarter event, the question posed itself, "Do business readers follow publishers? Do they buy books based on who published them? " Being inside the industry, it would seem logical to assume, "yes, they do," but perhaps only because we do.

Marshall Goldsmith's MOJO
By Porchlight
Marshall Goldsmith brought his MOJO to Milwaukee today for our LeaveSmarter series, and I think he really woke the audience up in a way most business speakers just don't. The first thing Marshall did was rearrange that preordained seating, having everybody get up and sit next to somebody they didn't know.

Books as Intellectual Assets in an Economic Discourse
By Porchlight
Michael Lewis's latest book, The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, was released this week to a lot of media attention and bestseller lists. We'll review the book more in depth on this site and elsewhere over the coming weeks, but its very release is what's giving me hope this week. You see, for all the doom-and-gloom surrounding publishing these days, publishers themselves have done a quietly masterful job of finding books that put the Great Recession, and what caused it, in focus over the last year and a half—Michael Lewis being but the latest (albeit one of the finest) voices in the choir that publishers have been directing.

The Future of Publishing
By Porchlight
Everyone either has the answer, or is trying to find it. For myself, I'm pretty interested in the presence of publishing - what's happening right now. There's a lot of cool stuff happening; great books, great online stuff, great creativity and ideas exploding all around us.
