Full Description
In 1964 after graduating from Anderson High School, Bobby decided to join the United States Marine Corps. Bobby decided to join because at the time he felt like he was at a crossroads in his life. He knew that he didn't want to have to depend on his mother to support him for the rest of his life and he didn't think college was something he wanted to pursue. There were some other guys in the neighborhood that he looked up to and most of them were joining the Marines, so he decided he would check it out to see if it was something he wanted to do. The year before (1963) he witnessed the assassination of John F. Kennedy President of the United States. In 1960 President Kennedy ordered military advisors to a country called Vietnam. These advisors were training the South Vietnamese Army which was an ally of the United States to defend their country against the North Vietnamese communist government. In November of 1964, Bobby enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Bobby Sneed was involved in dangerous combat missions during his time of eleven months and twenty-one days in Vietnam. This diary gives a day by day account of what happened during his time in Vietnam.
